All good things must come to an end and Supernatural is no exception. The series has attracted a solid fan following and has performed consistently in the ratings, but sooner or later, fans will have to bid farewell to the good-looking Winchester boys. The question is: when will it end?
Supernatural, which stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, is presently in its third season, finishing off the remaining new episodes after the two-month hiatus that was caused by the writers' strike. After that, fans still have 22 new episodes to look forward to, knowing that the series has already been given an early renewal by The CW for a fourth season. While the paranormal series may still come back for another run, the fifth season may also be its last.
Ending Supernatural in the fifth season is something anticipated by show creator Eric Kripke. “Yes, there is certainly more to explore,” Kripke said. “But we sort of have this five-year map. And Jared and Jensen like the idea of a five-year map because we work them so hard. It's possible, but I don't know…But a lot of these issues are beyond my control at the corporate level with ratings, etc. But my personal feeling is that I still want to go out in year five. It's better to go out strong and on top than to be 8 or 9 years into a piece of sh*t. You want conclusions… you want to end it. It's an epic story and epic stories deserve a good ending.”
Of course, only time will tell. Closing the curtains on the series in its fifth season isn't something definite at this point and a lot can still happen in a span of two years.
Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes of "Long-Distance Call"
I'm not objective about last night's episode of Supernatural. I know many of you fans loved it because of the great emotional moments with Dean (Jensen Ackles), but for me, “Long-Distance Call” will forever be the episode I got to see first-hand. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to TV, DVRing all my schedule shows well in advance, scheduling my entire life around the many shows I have to watch (not want to, have to). So to actually see talented people create something I love so much was an experience I never though I'd have.
It doesn't hurt that I got to watch a really good show get made. Though I wasn't an original fan, I've fallen quite hard for Supernatural, and I owe it all to this job and you, the passionate fans who convinced me this show was something special.
On the day I visited the set, they were filming most of the motel room scenes. First up was the incredibly long scene when Dean goes on about weather patterns, and needing to believe that his dad really does now how to save him. The second was the beautiful final scene. When we left at 8pm, the crew and Jensen were prepping the scene in the motel bathroom where he was talking to his “dad.”
In addition, I saw a few of the other sets, including Lainy's bedroom. This photo is one of me and fellow BuddyTV staffer Royce Yuen chilling on Lainy's bed (click on the photo to enlarge for a super-detailed look). I was stunned at the level of detail that goes into making something as simple as a girl's bedroom. The books on the shelves (most of them were about dreams and psychology), the numerous anime posters, the CDs, the set decoration is so detailed that I can't imagine the painstaking work that goes into making new sets and new rooms for every episode.
There were three highlights of the entire trip for me. The first, as you'll see in our first video on the next page, was when I first spied Sam and Dean, watching Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles quickly run through their lines while waiting for the cameras to be ready. These two actors who I'd only seen on TV and photos were now flesh and blood people sitting in front of me.
The second was right before I left, just talking to Jensen as he sat on his tiny motorbike. There were no interviews, no recorders, and Jensen was just a regular dude. The third was when I got my picture taken with Jared and he put his arm around me like we were best buds. I was right there with Sam Winchester, with Rory's Dean Forester, towering over me like a giant.
To close out the coverage of BuddyTV's exclusive Supernatural, we bring you clips you can't find anywhere else. First up is a look at Jensen and Jared running through their lines for the long motel scene where Dean tries to convince Sam their dad is really trying to help. The second is some b-roll footage we filmed of the guys actually filming the scene. I hope you enjoy this and all our set visit coverage even one-tenth as much as I enjoyed my trip to Vancouver.
Fanbolt has six copies of Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2 to give away and Emma was gracious enough to let me know about it to tell you guys!

Supernatural is one of the few shows on television that revolves almost completely around two characters. This is excellent for fans of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, as it guarantees the actors will get plenty of screen time in almost every episode of the series. However, because the show is so reliant on the chemistry between the leads, it can have a tough time introducing new characters to the mix. For every new character that is beloved by the fans, such as Ellen or Jo, there are those like Ruby (Katie Cassidy) and Bela that cause a major uproar.
TV Guide has recently announced that fans will be saying goodbye to one major character when Supernatural season 4 launches in the fall. Will the change have a negative affect on the show, or will it help make it better than ever?
It's been announced that due to both budget restrictions and negative fan reaction, the character of Bela (Lauren Cohan) will not be returning in season 4. Series creator Eric Kripke told TV Guide, "I'm sad to see Lauren go. I think she's going to have a huge career, but it became increasingly obvious to the writers that the character as we conceived it simply wasn't working."
One thing I respect about Eric Kripke is that he's very open to listening to what the fans have to say about the series. When the majority of the Supernatural fanbase pipes up and declares that something is taking away from the show, Kripke is quick to respond and fix it however he can. That's assuming, of course, that it can be fixed without ruining the overall story. Many fans aren't too keen on Ruby either, but it's impossible to deny that she's played an important role in the Supernatural mythology and will probably be needed in season 4.
What went wrong with Bela? I'm interested to know how the writers originally envisioned the character, and what went awry on the way to the screen. I think the major problem wasn't the actress, but the simple fact that we never had any reason to care about Bela. She showed up, antagonized the boys, and was never really fleshed out as a character. Unlike Ruby, she also didn't seem essential to the mythology in any way.
Now that we know that we'll soon say goodbye to Bela, how do you want her to go out? Should she drive off into the sunset, or should she die some sort of horrible death? We should find out her fate within the next few episodes.
Supernatural creator Eric Kripke seems like a man with a plan. Like most of the great minds working in television, Kripke appears to know exactly where he wants his story to go and how his characters should evolve. However, one of the toughest aspects of producing a series is making sure your vision isn't too expensive. A creator can dream up the most fantastical things imaginable, but those things will only make it to the screen if they can be done cheaply.
In a recent interview with TV Guide, Kripke revealed his plans to have an all-out demon war in season 4 of Supernatural. Unfortunately, due to the shrinking budget imposed by Warner Brothers, the studio that produces the show, the war will have to be smaller and grittier than originally planned.
In the interview, Kripke mentions that it was originally the studio's decision to open up the scope of the story and make things more epic in season 3. When Kripke let the studio execs know that "epic" would translate to a higher budget, the network told him to go ahead and go for it. However, after coming in "way, way over budget" on "The Magnificent Seven" episode from early in the season, the studio clamped down and insisted that Kripke stick to the budget for the rest of the year. When he asked how to present a full-scale demon war with such a small amount of cash, the network basically said, "Figure it out."
"So here we are, a war without the money to mount it," Kripke pointed out. "And our Season 4 budget is even smaller than our Season 3 budget. Therefore, we'll be employing all kinds of tricks next year — the war will be smaller, more contained, underground, more guerrilla-style. I actually think it'll improve the show. Looking back over Season 3, the spectacle and size is never as interesting as the episodes that focus on the brothers. I think we probably got a little too distracted at times. So in Season 4, there will still be the war, but we'll be presenting it in our scruffy, angsty, Supernatural way, and we'll return to concentrating on the relationships and the characters."
While focusing more on Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) is never a bad thing, I've been a big fan of the more epic scope present throughout season 3. It gives the story a more propulsive feel, like it's building up to something monumental and huge. The fact that it will be building up to "skirmishes and off-camera battles," as Kripke puts it, is a bit disappointing. However, there's not much that can be done when the show is on a small network with a limited amount of cash.
Despite the budgetary limitations, Kripke is optimistic that the important aspects of the story will remain unaffected. "I have a core story that I want to tell, and I've never wavered from it, not once," he said. "It's the saga of the Winchester clan — who the brothers really are, who their parents really are, why Demons are so closely intertwined with them, what their destiny really is. It's an epic, emotional family story at its heart, and to me, that's what Supernatural is really and truly about."
Exclusive Video Interview: Jared Padalecki Answers Fan Questions
Everyone knows that Supernatural star Jared Padalecki is a tall guy. We've seen him tower of co-stars in nearly every TV or movie he's done. Yet not until you come face-to-face with the man (or, in my case, face-to-neck) can you truly appreciate Jared's height.
BuddyTV sat down with Jared Padalecki during our recent Supernatural set visit to ask him some questions submitted by fans on our site. Like Jensen Ackles, Jared was in the middle of a busy day of filming, and during nearly every break he was on his cell phone, dealing with travel issues to make it to EyeCon in Orlando. Creation Entertainment hosted its second Salute to “Supernatural” convention in Los Angeles at the Marriott at LAX on March 29 and 30 (the first one in November was held in Chicago) with guests of honor Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, Dean and Sam Winchester themselves. Frederic Lane (who has appeared on “Lost” and “The X-Files” and on “Supernatural,” he played the yellow-eyed demon, Azazel) and Chad Lindberg (who starred in “The Fast and the Furious” and played MIT-educated, mullet-sporting Ash on “Supernatural”) appeared on Saturday. Joining the stars on Sunday was Padalecki’s fiance (whom he met while working on the horror flick “Cry Wolf”) and surprise con guest, Sandra McCoy (who played the final lovely female host for crossroads demon in an episode where her boyfriend of four years shot her character in the head). And another Saturday highlight was creator Eric Kripke coming out to answer questions from devoted followers and reinforcing with every response that he is the brilliant mastermind fans believe him to be.
A cool, gray weekend in March was warmed by the smiles of hundreds of adoring female fans (and the few token husbands or sons who were dragged along) at the LAX Marriott for the 2008 Creation Entertainment "Salute to Supernatural."
While the festivities kicked off on Friday, March 28, with pre-registration, special vendors' sales, and a concert by fan favorite Jason Manns, things really didn't get rolling until Saturday afternoon when creator Eric Kripke took the stage to answer some questions that both the strike and the general suspenseful nature of the show previously left hanging.
The most prominent thing on everyone's mind seemed to be the concept of a "Body Swap" episode, in which Dean and Sam experience their own Freaky Friday moment as well as the return of new episodes. The CW will air a three reruns this month to get the audience back into the flow of the show until the first post-strike episode is ready to air on April 24. "Body Swap" wasn't confirmed by Kripke, but it wasn't entirely shot down, either, and the fan who seeded his mind with it might want to register the spec so she can collect residuals when it undoubtedly turns up in a season or two, as it proved to be a very popular topic all weekend.
