Jeff Korbelik: TV's Primetime on Demand a lifesaver

Thank goodness for Primetime on Demand (Time Warner channel 199). Otherwise, 8 p.m Thursdays would be extremely difficult for me.

The timeslot has four shows I regularly watch: "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC), "CSI" (CBS), "The Office" (NBC) and "Supernatural" (The CW).

My DVR, though, only allows me to record two at a time. Fortunately, "The Office" and "CSI" are available on Primetime.

It's a good thing because if I had to choose, "CSI," "Grey's" or "The Office" would fall by the wayside.

But not "Supernatural," which will be part of my end-of-the-year top 10 list.

Really? Yes, really.

What started as a "kill-the-demon-of-the-week" drama, "Supernatural" now has evolved into one of the most layered shows on television, teeming with religious and social themes.

Sadly, this season, its fifth, may be its last. Creator Eric Kripke never planned to go beyond five, with this year's angels-versus-demons apocalyptic storyline as the end to it.

There's hope, however, that it could go on - stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are under contract through a sixth season. We'll see.

Anyway, for the uninitiated, "Supernatural" has been one of The CW's mainstays, along with "Smallville" and "One Tree Hill."

Most fans of Joss Whedon's "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" are fans of this as well because the writing is similar, featuring a mix of drama, horror and humor.

The first three seasons chronicled brothers Dean (Ackles) and Sam (Padalecki) chasing the demon responsible for their mother's death. Harry Dean Morgan (Denny in "Grey's") had a recurring role as the brothers' father.

The past two years have revolved around archangels - Michael, Gabriel, Rafael and the most notorious of them all, Lucifer, who is on Earth hell-bent on destroying humanity.

The brothers are trying to stop him and, in the process, save their own sometimes strained relationship.

Ackles and Padalecki are the draws here. The show has other things going for it - Dean's black 1967 Chevy Impala, the classic rock soundtrack, etc.

(The music, by the way, is much more appealing than the angsty alt-rock on "Grey's" that often drowns out the actors.)

If you haven't watched, go back and catch the first few seasons on DVD. You have time: This season won't resume until Jan. 21.

Does God Save the Supernatural Boys?

Can you believe we have to wait almost two months for a new episode of Supernatural, especially after yesterday's heartbreaker "Abandon All Hope"? The wait is going to be positively gruesome, but to keep, well, hope alive during the holidays, we gathered up the answers some of your burning SPN fan Q's.

So what's the biggest question of all right now in the Supernatural-verse? For our money it's this: Why is God so darn laissez-faire in his approach to the Apocalypse? The Winchesters could really use a hand mopping up all the fire and brimstone that's raining down on Earth right now! Come on, big man! Show your face!

So, will there be a deus ex machina in season five of Supernatural? Here's what we're hearing:

OK, we can't give you a firm answer on the God issue, but we can give you an intriguing answer. (Ain't that always the way?)

When we asked if God was going to get a permanent meat suit and/or an actor cast to play him, our inside source came back with a suspiciously circumspect reply: "No comment." What does that mean? We're handing it off to you to decide; we seriously suspect it means that God will pop up when we least expect it, in a form we never saw coming. Any guesses as to where, when or how?

As for God's right-hand man, some of you have asked if the storied archangel Michael would be appearing as a featured player, à la Lucifer, Castiel and Zachariah. We hear that as much as we'd all like to "see" the dude who handpicked Dean (Jensen Ackles) as his vessel, Michael's appearances on our mortal coil will be in borrowed bodies of no major consequence. Darn it! Michael sounds like he would be crazy hot.

And last but not least, what about our father who aren't in heaven, John Winchester himself? We wanted to know if the long-absent Jeffrey Dean Morgan might deign to appear in the climactic season five, when all his warnings and prophecies are finally coming to pass—especially that one about Dean having to put down Sam (Jared Padalecki)! Sadly, we hear that there is "zero" chance of JDM returning and that producers aren't even trying to get him back because storywise, "It doesn't make sense." Hmph.

Have you already let go of the dream of John Winchester, or do you still want to see him back on the show? And what about God? Where do you think he/she/it might make an appearance? Tell us in the comments!

Exclusive Interview: Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer on Supernatural), Part I

You may not know the name just yet -- though you will -- but if you're a fan of Dexter, Supernatural (TV) and/or Lost, then you know Mark Pellegrino. Pellegrino, who can boast of 100 film and television credits, played Paul, Rita's (Rita Benz) piece-of-work ex-husband on Dexter, and he's also Lucifer on Supernatural and the mysterious Jacob on Lost. He'll be back on Supernatural on Nov. 19, in the show's last episode for 2009, "Abandon All Hope," and will return to Lost when that series kicks off its sixth and final season in early 2010. PopStar recently caught up with Pellegrino for an extensive --and exclusive -- two-part interview. Look for part two tomorrow.

At this point, when people recognize you on the street, what role is it that they most associate you with?
The most feedback I get so far is from Dexter and it usually goes something like this: "Oh my God. you're Paul from Dexter right?" "Yes." "I love you man. You are such an a--hole. Do you mind signing something or taking a picture with me...?" But here's a little bit of recent irony. When I'm in Hawaii shooting for Lost I've been getting stopped for Supernatural. And when I'm in Vancouver shooting for Supernatural I've been getting stopped for Lost. Go figure.

Let's talk about Supernatural and then we'll get into Lost in the second part of our conversation. So many actors have played Lucifer/Satan over the years. How did you go about delivering a performance and creating a character that was at once familiar and scary, but fresh and original?
Well, luckily the writers have a very different take on things with respect to the dynamics of the angels. As you know, the angels in the show can be, well, a---holes. It is Lucifer who is kind and empathetic and truthful. So, play the "Prince of Lies" as the most sincere one of the bunch and you have a fresh take. But I have a feeling things are gonna change. Lucifer has a big chip on his shoulder and that can't be restrained for long. (Read Full Article)

Jensen's Engaged! So Is Jackles in Trouble?

It looks like Jackles may be over.

The Supernatural costars—and super besties—Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki may need to redefine their relaysh now that Jensen is taking the next step with longtime girlfriend Danneel Harris.

Jensen's rep confirms to E! News that the two are indeed engaged.

So what does that mean for our favorite TV BFFs? Can they still find time to hang all the time, or will the missus be in the way?

We have a feeling Jared and Jensen will find time to do their guy stuff, but surely not as much since Ackles will want to be a good, attentive hubby.

Only problem: Where's the heat between Jensen and Danneel?

From what we hear through the kissy grapevine, the newly engaged lovebirds have about as much passion as Vince Vaughn and his fiancée, Kyla Webber. In other words: No one's actually seen it in action. Maybe these folks are all private and stuff?

Remember, soccer moms (who know everything, btw) told us how they thought Vince and Kyla didn't seem like a "couple couple"—totally heatless.

We're hearing rumblings of the same for Jensen and Danneel. I mean, jeez, don't tell us Jensen's gonna just end up being another George Clooney who struts around these quasi beauties with all the aplomb of a dog trainer strutting his latest prize furry thing?

Hey, maybe Hollywood's just made us cynical, and that's a good thing. A down-to-earth couple who can have a normal marriage, right? Lord knows there are just tons of those in Hollywood.

More importantly, what do you all think of the latest engagement?

Preview of 'Supernatural' 5.09: Fan Convention

See larger image

Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are attending a "Supernatural" convention, on their show. Super fan Becky (guest star Emily Perkins) uses Chuck's (guest star Chuck Benedict) phone to trick Sam and Dean into attending a Supernatural fan convention, complete with fans dressed up as Sam and Dean.

One of the activities is a live action role playing game, but things quickly turn sour after a real ghost appears on the scene. Based on the casting call, there would be two young men named Demian and Barnes who are friends and have heroic aspirations despite their exterior appearance.

"The Real Ghostbusters" is an episode written by Eric Kripke and it will air on Thursday, November 12.

This would be one of those light episodes of "Supernatural" before the show goes on with a serious episode called "Abandon All Hope" on November 19. In that pivotal episode, Sam, Dean and Castiel track down the Colt and head off to find Lucifer to send him back to Hell. Jim Beaver said that the particular episode is "powerful and the fans will be left reeling."
